Fractal is a STEAM K-8 alternative school and robotics maker space in Franklinton, Ohio. During my research distinction, I discovered how interior design can make learning in school more engaging and inspiring for children through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) education and the principles of biophilia. My focus within biophilia was on fractal geometry. Through my secondary research, I found that the stress reduction experienced when viewing fractals is a physiological response in our visual system. The fractals that we see in nature follow the same geometric principles in our bodies, creating an innate human connection to fractals. Layers of fractal and biophilic complexity were considered during the design development phase. Fractal, the adaptive reuse K-8 school, was designed based on the voronio fractal in a leaf. The voronoi pattern was used to organically break up the building into programmatic zones, hierarchically anchoring the structure of the building to fractals.
